Why Is It Important To Recognize A Low Blood Sugar Level
LOW blood SUGAR in Diabetics (hypoglycemia). Everything you NEED to know!
Low blood sugar levels can happen with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Low levels are more likely to happen if you use insulin. Hypoglycemia can cause you to have falls, accidents, and injuries. A blood sugar level that gets too low can lead to seizures, coma, and death. Learn to recognize the symptoms early so you can get treatment quickly. What To Do When Your Blood Sugar Levels Drop Too LowPeople who use insulin and other diabetes medications are at risk for hypoglycemia. Keep this action plan handy so you’re prepared. If you take insulin or diabetes medication, you may be at risk of developing hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar. Without quick attention, hypoglycemia can lead to serious complications, so its important to know what to do if it happens to you or someone close to you. In very severe cases, hypoglycemia can lead to seizures or loss of consciousness, says a clinical assistant professor of medicine, endocrinology, gerontology, and metabolism at Stanford Health Care, and chief of the Stanford Endocrine Clinic. It’s possible to have hypoglycemia but have no symptoms, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases . On the other hand, symptoms can also come on rapidly. While symptoms vary from person to person, if you develop mild to moderate low blood sugar you may:
Some people feel tingling or numbness in their extremities too, says Rodolfo Galindo, MD, an assistant professor of medicine in the division of endocrinology, metabolism, and lipids at the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, and chair of the inpatient diabetes taskforce. Thinkstock The 17 Best Foods To Lower Your Blood SugarFor people with prediabetes, diabetes, or other conditions that affect blood sugar, diet is a major part of maintaining healthy blood sugar levels. Although factors like body weight, activity, stress, and genetics also play a role in blood sugar maintenance, following a healthy diet is critical for blood sugar control . While some foods, including items high in added sugar and refined carbs, can contribute to blood sugar fluctuations, others can optimize blood sugar control while promoting overall health ( You May Like: Is Dextrose Bad For Diabetics Can Hypo Unawareness Be DangerousReduced hypo awareness can potentially be dangerous. If you suffer hypoglycemia you should be careful to test before putting either yourself or others in any potential danger. Examples when hypoglycemia and unawareness of it could be particularly dangerous include driving, operating dangerous machinery at work and even day to day tasks such as cooking or even crossing the road. What To Eat When You Wake UpYou should eat a small meal as soon as possible after waking. A good breakfast should consist of protein, such as scrambled eggs, plus a complex carbohydrate. Try these:
In addition, be mindful of your consumption of juices. Stick to 100% juice varieties that do not have added sweeteners, and limit your intake to 4 to 6 ounces. Dilute the juice with water or choose a big glass of water with lemon instead. Steel-cut oatmeal is lower on the glycemic index than other types of oatmeal, plus it contains lots of soluble fiber. Soluble fiber helps slow down carbohydrate absorption, which helps keep your blood sugar stable. Make sure to choose a type with no added sugar or corn syrup. Also, caffeine may affect blood sugar in some people. Decaffeinated coffee or herbal tea may be your best bet for a hot breakfast drink. Discuss caffeine intake with your doctor to determine if its an important factor for you. High-Dose Insulin Euglycemic Therapy in the Treatment of a Massive Caffeine Overdose
: Nov. 1, 2015 How To Manage Type 1 DiabetesBefore the discovery of insulin, diabetes was a death sentence. People couldnt use the nutrients in their food and would become thin and malnourished. Managing the condition required a strict diets and reduced carbohydrate intake. Still, these measures werent enough to reduce mortality. In the early 1920s, Canadian surgeon Dr. Frederick Banting and medical student Charles Best discovered that insulin could help normalize blood sugar levels. Their discovery garnered them the Nobel Prize and allowed people with diabetes to live a much longer and healthier life. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , 12 percent of adults with diabetes take insulin only, and 14 percent take both insulin and an oral medication. Taken as prescribed, insulin is a lifesaver. However, too much of it can cause significant side effects and sometimes death. While some people may use excessive amounts of insulin intentionally, many others take too much insulin by accident. No matter the reason for the overdose, an insulin overdose needs to be treated immediately. Even with proper treatment, it can become a medical emergency. High Dose Insulin TherapyTake Home Points:
CCB/BB overdose Cardiovascular drugs cause many poisoning deaths each year, primarily from acute overdose. In 2016, cardiovascular drugs as a class were the second leading cause of poisoning deaths reported to the National Poison Data System , the majority of which were beta-blockers and calcium channel-blockers1 . This trend has continued through 2018, where calcium channel blockers and beta blockers were each listed in the top 10 substances associated with the largest number of fatalities 2. High dose insulin therapy – How does it work? While the efficacy of HDI has not been established with controlled clinical trials, there is substantial evidence from animal models and human case series. For instance, in a swine model of propranolol toxicity, pigs treated with vasopressors alone died within 20 minutes while those treated with HDI survived for 2-3 hours6. Safety considerations: So how do I do this? Protocols vary by institution, so a consultation with a medical toxicologist and local poison center is recommended.

It is structurally identical to the insulin produced by the human pancreas, but is still quite effective in cats and dogs. Helping to bring down high blood sugar, Novolin assists pets with diabetes mellitus in controlling their hyperglycemia. Novolin, like all insulins, is only offered as an injection. Precautions Patients on Novolin should monitor their blood sugar closely, as an overdose of this drug will cause the blood sugar to drop dangerously low. The safety of using Novolin with pregnant or nursing pets has not been tested, so caution should be used. Pets taking anabolic steroids, beta adrenergic blockers, diuretics, estrogen agents, glucocorticoids, MAOIs, progestin, thyroid hormones, aspirin, digoxin, dobutamine, epinephrine, furosemide, phenylbutazone, or tetracycline should tell their vet before taking Novolin, as they may decrease its effectiveness. Red Wines Health Benefits
5 Best and Worst Drinks for Diabetics
While alcohol was once thought to be bad for our health, we now know that it truly depends on the amount and type that you drink. Having red wine in moderation has been linked to numerous health benefits. Studies have found that drinking red wine in moderation helps prevent both colon and breast cancer, improves lung function, and has anti-aging benefits for our bodies. Furthermore, red wine is associated with a wide range of cognitive health benefits, including reducing the risk of depression and dementia. Red wine has also been linked to helping prevent type 2 diabetes. Animal studies have shown that red wine increases insulin sensitivity, which reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes. However, until now, it was believed that people who already had diabetes should avoid alcohol. Dont Miss: Lasagna And Wine List Of Drinks Without Sugar
Insulin Makers Say They Are Held Captive By Pbms
VERIFY: Did Biden raise the price of insulin?
The insulin makers maintain they have done the best they could in response to the dominance of the PBM industry. The committee report “underscores how the health care system has evolved in recent years, exposing some people to higher prices at the pharmacy,” said Lilly’s Kueterman. “Despite Sanofi paying billions in rebates that lower insulin costs for middlemen, people’s costs at the pharmacy counter have continued to rise,” said the Sanofi spokesman. And Novo Nordisk’s Bachner maintains, “The information in the committee’s report and its accompanying documentation reflect a limited picture of the efforts put forth by our company and other companies to manage formulary access.” “This glimpse into the complexity of pricing, formularies, and the healthcare system demonstrates why Novo Nordisk continues to advocate for comprehensive solutions,” he added. The report details how drug companies set a list price and then use rebates to compete for positions on health plans’ formularies. The PBMs which negotiate with drug companies on behalf of the health plans have become all powerful, with the three largest, CVS Caremark, Express Scripts, and OptumRx, managing drug benefits for some 250 million Americans, the committee reported. PBMs play a key role in whether and how drugs are added to a formulary. They generally pass most of a rebate on to health plans, but also retain a portion and charge additional fees based on a percentage of a drug’s list price. The Astronomical Price Of Insulin Hurts American Familiesessay A woman from Minnesota holds up her U.S. bottle of NovoLog insulin and a Canadian box of NovoRapid, which she bought at a pharmacy in Ontario, Canada, June 29, 2019 Drug companies charge more for insulin in the United States than in nearly three dozen other countries RAND researchers examinedand it’s not even close. The average list price for a unit of insulin in Canada was $12. Step across the border into America, and it’s $98.70. Those differences help explain why insulin has become a symbol of the high cost of American health care. Its prices have shot up in recent years, for reasons that are opaque at best, with those who can least afford it often paying the most. Reining in those prices has become the rare political cause embraced by Democrats and Republicans alike. This isn’t just some academic question: ‘How do our prices compare with those in other countries?’ said Andrew Mulcahy, a senior policy researcher at RAND who specializes in health care economics and led the study. It’s becoming a very practical question, because there are ideas out there to do something about it, and they can benefit from this kind of analysis. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services asked RAND to investigate how American insulin prices compare with those in other parts of the world. Researchers obtained list prices for all types of insulin from 33 countries in Europe, Asia, Australia, and the Americas. Plotted on a graph, the U.S. prices stand alone. Our Ruling: Missing ContextWe rate this claim about the Biden administration’s action to be MISSING CONTEXT, based on our research. Some patients who use insulin and EpiPens the fraction who are served by federally qualified health centers may benefit from Trump’s order, but others could suffer if it results in decreased access for the centers to the 340B drug discount program. Also, the freeze through March 22 does not represent final action on the program, so it’s premature to call it a “reversal.” You May Like: Greek Yogurt And Diabetes White House Mandates Pfizer Vaccines For Millions Of Citizens Before The Fda Clinical Or Safety Reviews Have Been Made PublicThere have been several initiatives carried out in the commercial sector to address insulin affordability. Last year, for example, the insurer Cigna and its pharmacy benefit management division Express Scripts announced a program designed to cap out-of-pocket costs for diabetic patients at $25 a month. Moreover, the recent advent of biosimilar insulin products may help reduce out-of-pocket costs, as could the possibility of automatic interchangeability of biosimilar insulin and originator products. Nevertheless, for a comprehensive approach to improving insulin affordability that reaches a larger number of diabetic patients the federal government would need to get involved, and it has to a certain extent. Trump Administration has lowered out-of-pocket insulin costs for some President Trump has made some dubious claims on insulin prices, including one he uttered during a September presidential debate. There, he boasted that he had helped lower the price of insulin to the point that its so cheap, its like water. Trump also signed an executive order in July that would require federally qualified health centers to share the steep savings they receive through the 340B program with indigent patients, specifically for epinephrine and insulin products. But, this only applies to a very small portion hospitals participating in the 340B program. And, it doesnt resolve the much larger issue that the 340B program discounts arent generally winding up where theyre supposed to. ‘vicious Cycle’ Sent Insulin Costs Through Roof: Senate CommitteeAlicia Ault US insulin manufacturers and the pharmaceutical benefits management industry are refuting a report by a prominent Senate committee finding that the two sectors acted synergistically to increase the cost of insulin for patients with diabetes. The Senate Committee on Finance issued findings from a 2-year investigation on January 14, releasing a 90-page report and more than 1700 pages of documents containing internal emails, contracts, and presentations. “We found that the business practices of and the competitive relationships between manufacturers and middlemen have created a vicious cycle of price increases that have sent costs for patients and taxpayers through the roof,” said Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley in a statement. “This industry is anything but a free market when PBMs spur drug makers to hike list prices in order to secure prime formulary placement and greater rebates and fees,” Grassley said. Across the nation, participating enhanced Part D prescription drug plans will provide Medicare beneficiaries access to a broad set of insulins at a maximum $35 copay for a months supply, from the beginning of the year through the Part D coverage gap. The model follows on the Trump Administrations previously announced 13.5 percent decline in the average monthly basic Part D premium since 2017 to the lowest level in seven years. Under President Trumps leadership, for the first time, CMS is enabling and encouraging Part D plans to offer fixed, predictable copays for beneficiaries rather than leaving seniors paying 25 percent of the drugs cost in the coverage gap. Both manufacturers and Part D sponsors responded to this market-based solution in force and seniors that use insulin will reap the benefits. The Part D Senior Savings Model builds on steps the Trump Administration has already taken to strengthen Medicare and improve the quality of care for patients with diabetes. CMS has taken the following actions to address the needs of beneficiaries with diabetes: Overall Insulin Epipen Pricing Isn’t AffectedNationally, 30 million Americans suffer from diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association. And nearly one in 50 Americans are at risk for anaphylaxis brought on by certain foods, insect bites, medications and latex, according to a 2013 study by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. But not all of those patients require insulin or epinephrine. And most who live in extreme poverty, or less than 200% of the federal poverty level an equation that works out to $34,840 for a family of two already receive free or discounted prescription drugs, a national health policy expert said. Karyn Schwartz, a senior fellow at the Kaiser Family Foundation, a nonpartisan nonprofit that analyzes health policy, said some patients served by the 1,400 federally backed health centers nationally, such as those with high deductibles or those who are uninsured and paying list prices for the drugs, would have benefitted from the new pricing rule. But it’s hard to say how many, she said. It’s also difficult to speculate about how many new patients would switch care to a community health center to take advantage of the discounted insulin and EpiPen prices, she said. The cost of insulin and other supplies was $250 a month, expensive but bearable. Then he had to get off his mother’s insurance at the age of 26 and, unable to find a reasonable plan, tried to go to the pharmacy and pay out-of-pocket. The cost was $1,300 for a month’s supply. “He left without anything, thinking he could make what he had in his supplies last until payday,” says his mother, Nicole Smith-Holt, of Richfield, MN. “He died about 4 days before his paycheck.” The cause of death was ketoacidosis, when the body can’t use sugar in the blood for energy so it burns fat and muscle instead, making high levels of acids called ketones build up. Lack of insulin causes ketoacidosis. “Almost on a daily basis, people are reaching out to me , saying they’re facing the same type of struggles. I’m hearing about people who are not able to test their blood sugars on a daily basis,” says Smith-Holt. Hirsch, the University of Washington doctor, says such cases highlight the dangers of rationing insulin. “Whether you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes, you are going to end up with higher blood sugars. And over periods of time, that can result in really bad downstream effects. But it’s much worse than that,” he says. Turning to the black market for insulin could be equally dangerous, and it’s something Hirsch never advises his patients to do. Others, meanwhile, are taking the industry on. Debate On The Real Impact Of The Proposal
Can Anyone Control The Cost Of Insulin? | All In | MSNBC
The executive order signed by former President Trump was meant to require federally qualified health centers who purchase insulins and epinephrine in the 340B program to pass the savings from discounted drug prices directly on to medically underserved patients. The statement made by the US Health and Human Services about the rule said that the proposal would increase access to life-saving insulin and epinephrine for the patients who face especially high costs among the 28 million patients who visit every year. The rule was finalized in December of last year. However, upon publishing it, the HHS itself acknowledged that the rules economic impact will most likely be minimal since the majority of patients who get their insulin from community health centers already purchase the medication on a discounted price. The health centers involved also said the same thing. They stated that they already pass on those savings and they even called the rule an administrative burden that paints them as predators and enemies that price-gouge patients. Executive orders, such as the one in question, are published in the Federal Register to explain how the president has instructed various executive agencies on how to manage operations and gives the public an opportunity to review and comment on them. In July 2020, Trump signed a series of executive orders that he proposed as a solution for lowering the high premium prices of prescription drugs, including the price of insulin. Per the Executive Order on Access to Affordable Life-Saving Medications, the Department of Health and Human Services is required to enable Americans without access to affordable insulin and injectable epinephrine through commercial insurance or Federal programs, such as Medicare and Medicaid, to purchase these pharmaceuticals from an FQHC at a price that aligns with the cost at which the FQHC acquired the medication. HHS finalized the rule in late December but acknowledged the economic impact is expected to be minimal since the vast majority of patients who get insulin from Community Health Centers already get discounted medication. In some cases, those patients receive a one-month supply of insulin for just $7, according to the report published in the Federal Register. Policy Recommendations To Bring Down Insulin PricesReed and DeGette in the report recommended 11 policy proposals to address the rising cost of insulin:
Also Check: How Does High Blood Sugar Feel How The Companies Justify Their Price IncreasesWith Type 1 diabetes, which affects about 5 percent of people with diabetes in the US, the immune system attacks the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, leaving the body with little or none of the hormone. In Type 2 diabetes, the pancreas still makes insulin, but the body has grown resistant to its effects. In both cases, patients rely on insulin medication to keep energy from food flowing into their bodies. The US is a global outlier on money spent on the drug, representing only 15 percent of the global insulin market and generating almost half of the pharmaceutical industrys insulin revenue. According to a recent study in JAMA Internal Medicine, in the 1990s Medicaid paid between $2.36 and $4.43 per unit of insulin by 2014, those prices more than tripled, depending on the formulation. The doctors and researchers who study insulin say it is yet another example along with EpiPens and of companies raising the cost of their products because of the lax regulatory environment around drug pricing. They are doing it because they can, Jing Luo, a researcher at Brigham and Womens Hospital, told Vox in 2017, and its scary because it happens in all kinds of different drugs and drug classes. In countries with single-payer health systems, governments exert much more influence over the entire health care process. The US doesnt do that. Instead, America has long taken a free market approach to pharmaceuticals. Committee Found Companies Raised Prices To Balance Out RebatesTo balance out rising rebates, insulin manufacturers in turn “aggressively” raised the list price of their insulin, the committee found. “The investigation found that Novo Nordisk and Sanofi not only closely monitored the others’ price increases, they actually increased prices in lockstep sometimes within hours or days of each other a practice known as ‘shadow pricing,'” said the committee. Internal emails also show that in 2014 Lilly executives decided to enact a list price increase for Humalog earlier than expected when the company heard Novo Nordisk had decided to increase list prices for its and Levemir products. The committee documented list price increases of 50%-70% for insulins, sometimes over just a 3-year period. The investigation also found after reviewing internal documents that drug makers often set prices based on whether it might harm a PBM’s or health plan’s bottom line. The goal was to keep those clients happy and to preserve market share, said the committee. PBMs did not do anything to discourage the increases in list prices, said the committee. Instead, “PBMs used their size and aggressive negotiating tactics, like the threat of excluding drugs from formularies, to extract more generous rebates, discounts, and fees from insulin manufacturers.” The PBM industry’s lobbying group, the Pharmacy Management Care Association , said it shared the committee’s “urgency in addressing affordability and access for insulin-dependent patients,” in a statement. The deal struck with the nations insulin manufacturers and health care providers will limit the co-pay for a months supply of insulin to $35 a 66 percent reduction to current costs, White House counselor Kellyanne Conway said. The initiative will apply to the 1 in 3 Medicare enrollees who have diabetes, which is approximately 3 million people. The announcement comes on the heels of hearings into the rising cost of insulin in the United States, with one diabetic groom-to-be dying in 2019 after switching to a cheaper version to help pay for his wedding. Having more predictable out of pocket costs will help seniors adhere to their doctors orders, Conway told reporters on a briefing call. The initiative will be unveiled during an event in the White House Rose Garden with Trump and the nations health care executives. The plan, effective from January 2021, will save seniors approximately 56 percent or an average of $446 each year in insulin co-pays, said Seema Verma, administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. World Diabetes Day: What to eat and not eat
Planning healthier meals and snacks can go a long way to helping you reach your goals. Talk to your registered dietitian or health-care team about the amount of carbohydrates that are right for you and for help with meal planning. A weekly meal plan will help you shop for the right foods and encourage more cooking at home. Or Any Deep Fried Foods For That MatterFrying any type of food ultimately changes its composition, according to a study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. After having more than 70,000 women fill out a questionnaire about the foods they ate, researchers found that frequently indulging in fried foods was associated with a significantly increased risk of type 2 diabetes and a moderately increased risk of coronary artery disease, especially if those foods were consumed at a restaurant. This could come down to the amount and type of oil used, generous portion sizes, and the tendency to pair these foods with sugary beveragesall factors that lead to weight gain, the study authors write. However, even after adjusting their data for the consumption of sugary drinks, the connection between fried food and type 2 diabetes was still apparent. It depends on the method, but frying food literally changes the quality of its nutrients and spikes its calories, all while making it taste irresistibly delicious. What Are The Best CarbohydratesMost carbohydrate foods are good for people with diabetes, but those rich in fibre such as wholegrain breads , high fibre breakfast cereals, legumes, fruit and vegetables and those with low glycaemic index are better. Carbohydrate foods that have a low glycaemic index are more slowly digested and produce a more gradual rise in blood glucose levels, helping to sustain more even blood glucose levels.
For further information on Glycaemic Index refer to: The New Glucose Revolution The Glycaemic Index Solution for Optimum Health by Prof Jennie Brand-Miller, Kaye Foster-Powell, Prof Stephen Colagiuri. If you use a short acting insulin like Novorapid or Humalog at meals with a long acting insulin, a very low GI meal, such as a bowl of porridge for breakfast, may give you a low blood glucose level soon after your meal. Checking your blood glucose level before and two hours after a meal will help you to understand the effect foods have on your blood glucose levels. If you do get a low blood glucose level soon after you have finished a meal, it is important to discuss this with your dietitian or health care professional. Upon further analysis, the study participants who had overweight or obesity, which are risk factors for metabolic syndrome, had likely been swapping no-calorie soda for the full-sugar versions. They likely took this step to cut their calorie intake. This was an association, but it wasnt considered cause and effect. A 2016 study seemed to show that those drinking diet sodas had increased blood sugar levels and waist circumference. Disadvantages Of Low Carbohydrate Diets
What is the Best Diabetes Diet?
Concern has been expressed about the long-term health effects of low carbohydrate diets on renal function, calcium metabolism, lack of essential nutrients, and CVD risk , and a systematic review and meta-analysis reported that low carbohydrate diets were associated with a significantly higher risk of all-cause mortality . Reductions in carbohydrate intake may also be associated with an increased risk of hypoglycemia in those treated with insulin or insulin secretagogues, and to reduce this medical supervision, reductions in medication and self-monitoring of blood glucose concentrations are recommended for those adopting a low carbohydrate diet. Low carbohydrate diets tend to be higher in protein, and this may have an adverse effect on renal function . There are very few studies investigating renal function and low carbohydrate diets, although a recent study suggested that improvements in renal function are related to weight loss, and that this occurs to a similar extent with low carbohydrate, Mediterranean, and low fat diets . In obese people without diabetes, studies have shown that low carbohydrate diets have no harmful effects on glomerular filtration rate , albuminuria, fluid or electrolyte balance when compared to a low fat diet . Low Carb Vs High Carb Worst Mornings7. It was a harder to remember to eat vegetables on the higher-carb diet. When meals contained 60 grams of carbs or more, it was easy to just eat a sandwich and a piece of fruit, or chicken and a side of rice those meals felt complete as I was making them. On the low-carb diet, vegetables automatically filled the side-dish spot, and the meal didnt feel complete unless some veggies were on the plate . My higher carb meals were less likely to include vegetables, since the reminder to include them was not as apparent. 8.Eating a higher-carb diet without checking glucose often or wearing CGM would be like driving a racecar at 150 mph blindfolded. For all the reasons listed above, checking blood glucose often or wearing CGM seems essential on a higher-carb diet it allows for corrections after the inevitable turbulence of post-meal glucose spikes, large insulin doses, incorrect estimates, and hypoglycemia. Im fortunate to have access to CGM, and I recognize this is not possible for everybody with diabetes. But for those who choose to eat high carb, checking glucose often is critical. Atkins Diet Misconceptions: Low Carb and Diabetes (Part 2)
Carbohydrates include sugars and starches and together they make up one group of macronutrients the other two are protein and fat. When you consume carbohydrates, your digestive system breaks them down into individual sugar units that are absorbed into your blood. This triggers the pancreas to release insulin, a hormone that helps move glucose out of your blood and into your body’s cells so it can be used for energy. Sugars that aren’t immediately used for energy are either stored or converted to fat . To a lower degree, insulin is also released when you consume protein but isn’t problematic when the body has adequate insulin. You need to consume carbohydrates every day because they are your body’s primary energy source. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s 20202025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend that you get about half of your daily calories from nutrient-dense carbohydrate sources, which is between 900 to 1,300 calories in a 2,000 calorie diet. These are recommendations made to promote health and prevent diseases. According to the Institute of Medicine, the recommended dietary allowance for carbohydrates is 130 grams of carbohydrates per day. This is the average intake sufficient to meet the nutrient needs of 97%98% of the population. But this amount will increase to 175 grams if you’re pregnant. Medical management of type 2 diabetes has led to cynicism about the efficacy of lifestyle management, particularly dietary strategies, and at present the components of the most effective diet remain unknown. A recent systematic review and meta-analysis suggested that low carbohydrate, low glycemic index , Mediterranean, and high protein diets all showed greater improvements in glycemic control than control diets . Despite criticism of the statistical analysis due to heterogeneity of the studies included , this review supports the premise that improvements in glycemic control, CVD risk, and weight loss are achievable with different diets with varying amounts of carbohydrate, and that low carbohydrate diets are not necessarily superior in effect. Are All Carbohydrates Bad For DiabeticsA criticism levelled at the Atkins diet comes from the fact that the diet is often viewed as labelling all carbohydrates as bad. Some critics also claim that low carbohydrate diets may restrict the ability to exercise effectively, though this is furiously contested. Carbohydrates are a useful energy source and the level of carbohydrates which we need or can tolerate tends to vary from person to person. The Atkins diet looks to address this fact within the mid-term phases of the diet. Don’t Miss: Does Metformin Lower A1c Why Choose Carbohydrates With Fiber Rather Than SugarPictured Recipe: Strawberry & Tuna Spinach Salad Remember that carbohydrates can be further broken down into fiber and sugar. Research shows Americans eat too much added sugar and not enough fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy foods. Added sugar is anything that’s not plain dairy or fruit. The American Heart Association recommends women eat less than 24 grams of added sugar per day and men consume no more than 36 grams per day . Instead, try to prioritize carbohydrates that provide fiber. Aim to get 25-35 grams of feel-full fiber each day. Focus on the quality of carbs you eat, aiming to make half your plate nonstarchy vegetables, a quarter of your plate whole grains and a quarter of your plate protein at most meals. Reduce your consumption of low-fiber, sugary foods and beverages, including desserts, muffins, soda, sugary coffee beverages, fruit juice, ice cream and baked goods, which add carbs without much nutrition. The above recipe for Strawberry & Tuna Spinach Salad provides 20 grams of protein and 10 grams of fiber for a healthy, satisfying meal that’s also diabetes-friendly. What Is The Atkins DietCardiologist Robert Atkins created the Atkins diet in the 1960s. He believed that carbohydrates not fat were responsible for health problems and weight gain. As a result, his diet focused on eating plenty of fat, some protein and very few carbs. The goal of the Atkins diet is to change your metabolism. You burn stored body fat, rather than carbs, for energy, says Smith. And you can do this if you follow the diet closely. But its not for everyone, and there may be health risks involved. Also Check: Metformin Administration Time How To Count CarbsKeeping track of carbohydrates is key if you’re following a diabetes-friendly diet, but if you’ve never had to count carbs, you might be wondering where to start. There are 4 calories in 1 gram of carbohydrate, so you have to convert calories of carbohydrates into grams to know how many grams to consume each day. First, sit down with a dietitian to figure out your daily calorie needs. If, for example, you need 2,000 calories per day and are aiming for 40 percent from carbohydrates, you need to take 40 percent of 2,000: 0.4 x 2,000 = 800 calories Then divide by 4, since there are 4 calories in 1 gram of carbohydrate: 800 / 4 = 200 grams You’d want to aim for 200 grams of carbohydrates for the day. Be sure to space them evenly throughout the day in your meals and snacks. It’s also important to pair carbohydrates with protein and fat to slow digestion, prevent a blood sugar spike and keep you feeling fuller longer. Work with your health care provider to figure out how to balance carb intake with your medications, insulin and exercise routine-all will affect how and when you eat carbs. Focusing Too Much On Total Carbs And Not Enough On Carb QualityFor the best health, following a low-carb diet shouldnt just be about what you cut, it should also be about what you add into your nutrition plan, Zanini says. After all, a healthy diet meets all of your bodys nutritional needs and doesnt exceed your bodys caloric needs. But when people become narrowly fixed on reducing carbs, they can easily wind up replacing those carbs with high-calorie fats, as well as chemically laden sugar-free foods and artificial sweeteners. When following a low-carb diet, the more you can focus on whole, unprocessed foods, the better. These foods can certainly include high-fat foods such as olive oil, avocado, walnuts, and salmon, but the exact amount of fat you should eat depends on whether you are following a ketogenic diet or trying to build lean muscle through an increase in dietary protein, Urbanski says. Unfortunately, this has led most people with diabetes to wrongly believe that a high-fat diet will help them improve their health in the long term. Fiber thats naturally found in foods, whether soluble or insoluble, doesnt break down into glucose in the body, and doesnt raise blood sugar levels . You can actually subtract the fiber and sugar alcohols from the total carb content, leaving you with the digestible or net carb content. For example, 1 cup of cauliflower contains 5 grams of carbs, 3 of which are fiber. Therefore, its net carb content is 2 grams. Prebiotic fiber, such as inulin, has even been shown to improve fasting blood sugar and other health markers in people with type 2 diabetes .
