Keep Your Feet Dry To Reduce The Risk Of Infection
HOW DO YOU FEEL IF YOUR BLOOD SUGAR IS HIGH OR LOW?
Make sure that drying your feet is part of your hygiene routine. The space between the toes is very airtight, says Tillett. Skin gets moist and breaks down, leading to infection. Prevent this by toweling off thoroughly after washing your feet and by removing wet or sweaty socks or shoes immediately. As mentioned previously, you can still use moisturizer to prevent dry, cracked skin just avoid putting it between your toes. Nausea Vomiting Confusion And MoreThese seemingly disparate symptoms are all signs of a rare and life-threatening state called diabetic ketoacidosis , according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. DKA can cause the symptoms above, as well as stomach pain, trouble breathing, dry or flushed skin, fruity-smelling breath, or difficulty paying attention. It usually occurs in people with type 1 diabetes and is sometimes the first sign they are sick, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. DKA happens when the liver is unable to use the sugar in the blood for energy without insulin and begins to break down body fat into a type of fuel called ketones at such a high rate that they become toxic and make the blood acidic, the U.S. National Library of Medicine explains. DKA can be fatal if left untreated, so anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek care immediately. Over time, untreated high blood sugar can cause additional symptoms, such as: Quit Smoking To Improve Circulation In Your FeetThe dangers of smoking run from your head to your feet. The chemicals in cigarette smoke damage and constrict your blood vessels, which means that if you smoke, you’re depriving your feet of the nutrient- and oxygen-rich blood that fights infection and keeps them healthy. Diabetic patients already have risk factors that compromise their blood vessels. Its never too late to stop smoking, says Tillett. Don’t Miss: Can A Diabetic Get Tattoos About High Blood SugarHigh glucose levels occur when the body doesn’t have enough insulin or can’t properly use the insulin it has to shuttle glucose from the bloodstream to the bodys muscles, organs, and tissues for fuel, ONeill says. As a result, the amount of sugar in the blood builds up. Hyperglycemia typically happens when you consume more carbohydrates or bigger portions of food than usual if you don’t take enough insulin or other diabetes medication as prescribed and if you decrease your levels of physical activity, she says. Heightened stress levels can also increase blood sugar levels. Non-diabetes-related medications that are known to raise blood sugar levels include steroids, beta-blockers, birth control pills, and many mental health medications, she explains. Signs of high blood sugar include frequent urination, fatigue, dry or itchy skin, feeling thirsty, more frequent infections, and eating more food but not gaining as much weight as usual, says Athena Philis-Tsimikas, MD, the corporate vice president for the Scripps Whittier Diabetes Institute in La Jolla, California. High blood sugar levels can cause these symptoms through various mechanisms, according to the Mayo Clinic. For example, high blood sugar levels damage blood vessels and nerves throughout the body. They can also deprive organs of energy and can cause fluid to accumulate in the eyes. And in an attempt to get your blood sugar to a healthier level, your body will often increase urine output. You Feel Tiredness And Fatigue ConstantlyFatigue and extreme tiredness are symptoms of uncontrolled blood sugar, the ADA says. Simply put, when your body is not processing insulin properly or it doesnt have sufficient amounts of insulin, the sugar is staying in our blood rather than getting into our cells to be used for energy, Zanini says. What Are The Alarming High Blood Sugar Symptoms & Signs?
Hyperglycemia can be a serious problem if you don’t treat it, so it’s important to treat as soon as you detect it. If you fail to treat hyperglycemia, a condition called ketoacidosis could occur. Ketoacidosis develops when your body doesn’t have enough insulin. Without insulin, your body can’t use glucose for fuel, so your body breaks down fats to use for energy. When your body breaks down fats, waste products called ketones are produced. Your body cannot tolerate large amounts of ketones and will try to get rid of them through the urine. Unfortunately, the body cannot release all the ketones and they build up in your blood, which can lead to ketoacidosis. Ketoacidosis is life-threatening and needs immediate treatment. Testing either urine or blood is important, but when possible, a blood test is preferred because it gives you and your care team more precise information about your ketone levels. Because urine may have been in the bladder for some time, the results from these tests may show levels that are either higher or lower than the ketone levels that are actually circulating in your body. It is also very important to know that urine test trips degrade over time, so if you are using this method, you need to look at expiration dates carefully. Your diabetes care team can give you specific directions about when you should check for ketones, but in general, you should check for them when your blood glucose is 240 mg/dL or higher. You should also check for ketones if you notice any of the DKA symptoms listed above or if you are sick it is possible to have ketones while your blood glucose levels are within range . At-home urine test strips will change color to show the level of ketones in the urine. They typically report results as negative, trace, small, moderate or large. Blood ketone meters will provide a number that indicates the ketone levels. In fact, there are many different factors that can increase a persons risk for the disease, including genetics, body weight, fat distribution, physical activity levels, and race. However, it is true that people with diabetes may have to limit their sugar intake. Thats because type 2 diabetes is characterized by an inability to properly use insulin, a hormone that helps usher sugar out of the bloodstream and into the cells, where its used as energy. Eventually, the body is unable to produce enough insulin to keep your blood sugar levels stable. What Are The Risks Of HyperglycemiaHyperglycemia can be a sign that your body isnt getting enough insulin. It is normal for patients with T1D to get hyperglycemia, and most of the time this is simply treated with insulin. If the body does not have insulin for approximately 8 hours, you could develop a condition called diabetic ketoacidosis, or DKA. In DKA, your body breaks down fat for energy because it doesnt have enough insulin to use the sugar in your blood. This produces chemicals called ketones, which make your blood more acidic. DKA is dangerous. Too much acid in your blood can make you pass out or even cause death. Diabetes puts you at higher risk for calluses, corns, bunions, blisters, and ulcers and high blood sugar means these minor injuries and alterations may become gateways to potentially disabling infections. But you can take several steps to help keep your feet in good shape, including wearing specialized footwear, having regular foot exams, and performing low-impact exercise. Why does this complication occur in the first place? First, know that high blood sugar levels damage nerves. Researchers arent exactly sure how this damage happens, but they think that blood sugar may have a negative effect on the nervous systems cells and enzymes, according to the Joslin Diabetes Center. These damaged nerves may lead to diabetic neuropathy, a condition in which you lose feeling in your feet or your hands. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, neuropathy occurs in about 70 percent of people with diabetes, and its symptoms can result in harmful infections. After all, if you can’t feel your feet, you won’t be able to notice cuts, sores, or pain. And if you cant feel these irritations and wounds, they may lead to infection, and untreated infections can lead to gangrene, which in turn can require amputation. If you have diabetes, its very important to get regular eye exams. If you do develop diabetic retinopathy, early treatment can stop the damage and prevent blindness. If your eye doctor thinks you may have severe diabetic retinopathy or DME, they may do a test called a fluorescein angiogram. This test lets the doctor see pictures of the blood vessels in your retina. What Causes Diabetic RetinopathyDiabetic retinopathy is caused by high blood sugar due to diabetes. Over time, having too much sugar in your blood can damage your retina the part of your eye that detects light and sends signals to your brain through a nerve in the back of your eye . Diabetes damages blood vessels all over the body. The damage to your eyes starts when sugar blocks the tiny blood vessels that go to your retina, causing them to leak fluid or bleed. To make up for these blocked blood vessels, your eyes then grow new blood vessels that dont work well. These new blood vessels can leak or bleed easily. Also Check: Diabetes And Hypertension Relationship Who Is More Likely To Develop Diabetic Eye DiseaseAnyone with diabetes can develop diabetic eye disease. Your risk is greater with
High blood cholesterol and smoking may also raise your risk for diabetic eye disease. Some groups are affected more than others. African Americans, American Indians and Alaska Natives, Hispanics/Latinos, Pacific Islanders, and older adults are at greater risk of losing vision or going blind from diabetes. If you have diabetes and become pregnant, you can develop eye problems very quickly during your pregnancy. If you already have some diabetic retinopathy, it can get worse during pregnancy. Changes that help your body support a growing baby may put stress on the blood vessels in your eyes. Your health care team will suggest regular eye exams during pregnancy to catch and treat problems early and protect your vision. Diabetes that occurs only during pregnancy, called gestational diabetes, does not usually cause eye problems. Researchers aren’t sure why this is the case. Your chances of developing diabetic eye disease increase the longer you have diabetes. Treatment For Diabetic Retinopathy And Maculopathy
What is Diabetic Retinopathy?
If you develop Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy or Maculopathy, you will be advised to undergo tests and treatment. The aim of treatment in Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy is to stop the retina from forming new abnormal blood vessels. If the treatment is successful, the new vessels will shrink and some of them even disappear over a few months. The aim of treatment in Diabetic Maculopathy is to reduce the swelling or Oedema. Treatment is tailored to the stage of disease and patient and can include one or more of the following: anti-VEGF or steroid injections, Pascal® laser or vitrectomy surgery. Laser treatment can be applied either to a localised area or the entire retina with the exception of the macula, or both. If you develop high eye pressure or glaucoma, then drops may be given to help control the pressure and decrease the change for any long-term damage. If you have developed a cataract, then surgery is needed to remove the lens in your eye which is replaced with a clear artificial lens implant . If you have developed a vitreous haemorrhage or scar tissue causing a retinal detachment, it may be necessary for you to undergo vitrectomy surgery. These are bubbles in the injected drug. It is NOT uncommon to have a bloodshot eye or bruising of the white part of the eye. This may increase over the first few days and can look very serious. If your eye is NOT painful and your vision is NOT worse this does not require you to be seen by the doctor. It usually resolves within 2 weeks. It is common to have some minor irritation or feeling of grit or sand in the eye, but this should not increase or be severe. What Is The Treatment For Proliferative RetinopathyThe eye doctor will apply a large number of laser burns to your peripheral retina. The peripheral retina is the part of the retina that allows you to see to the side and in the dark. This treatment is called pan-retinal photocoagulation and you will usually have more than one session, two to three sessions are usually required at the start. The ophthalmologist may give you an injection of an anaesthetic under the white of the eye to make you more comfortable during the treatment. What Does A Diabetic Eye Exam IncludeDiabetic eye exams can vary in length and scope, depending on what your eye doctor feels is necessary to successfully manage your condition. For example, if you have just been diagnosed with diabetes and youve recently had a comprehensive eye exam that showed no signs of diabetic retinopathy, your follow-up diabetic eye exam may require your doctor to simply recheck the condition of your retina. But if youve had diabetes for a number of years and your doctor has already detected signs of retinopathy or other eye problems related to your disease, your diabetic eye exam may be more extensive and may even include some form of in-office treatment. The following tests and procedures are commonly performed in most diabetic eye exams: Recommended Reading: Metformin Dosage For Ketosis Stage : Proliferative Diabetic RetinopathyThis is an advanced stage of the disease, in which new blood vessels form in the retina. Since these blood vessels are often fragile, theres a higher risk of fluid leakage. This triggers different vision problems such as blurriness, reduced field of vision, and even blindness. Diabetic retinopathy doesnt usually cause symptoms during the nonproliferative stages, so its possible to have it and not know it. This is because blood vessels dont always leak in these stages. Many people dont have symptoms until the disease progresses to proliferative diabetic retinopathy. However, an eye examination by an eye care specialist or ophthalmologist can detect diabetic retinopathy in its earlier stages, before symptoms become apparent. Symptoms of proliferative diabetic retinopathy include:
Your doctor will likely also dilate your eyeto examine your optic nerve and retina using special eye drops. Doctors can also diagnose diabetic retinopathy with fluorescein angiography, which checks for abnormal blood vessel growth or leakage. Theyll inject a yellow dye into a vein in your arm, allowing the dye to travel through your blood vessels. A special camera takes images of the dye as it travels through the blood vessels in your retina. Keeping blood sugar within a healthy range can slow the progression of vision loss. HOW DO YOU FEEL IF YOUR BLOOD SUGAR IS HIGH OR LOW?
You may have these symptoms when your blood sugar has dropped below 70 milligrams per deciliter . When you have had diabetes for many years, you may not always develop symptoms of mild low blood sugar. Some young children with diabetes cannot recognize symptoms of low blood sugar. Others can, but not every time. To be safe, the parents need to do a home blood sugar test whenever they suspect low blood sugar in a child. Symptoms may include:
These symptoms may go away shortly after you eat food that contains sugar. When Its Time To Call A DoctorIf any of the symptoms mentioned have begun to impact your life, such as fatigue so severe you cant stay awake through the day, its a good idea to consult your physician. Dr. Fruge warns that unstable blood sugar levels could put you at higher risk of heart disease and stroke and it is a red flag for serious health issues so blood sugar issues should be taken seriously. You should also see a doctor if youre experiencing symptoms of hypoglycemia and havent been diagnosed with diabetes or any other underlying condition. If you do have diabetes and your hypoglycemia isnt responding to the treatments described above, thats another good cue to call your health care provider. If testing reveals you have Type 1 diabetes, youll need to continue to test your blood sugar levels as often as instructed by your physician, take insulin regularly and participate in regular exercise. This may mean you will need a new glucose monitoring system, so ask your doctor what they recommend. If youre diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, youll most likely need to do the same as for Type 1, as well as working with health care professionals to make lifestyle changes such as improving nutrition and planning workouts. Medication may be necessary as well. Healthy eating, regular exercise and other lifestyle changes can help alleviate symptoms and possibly even reverse prediabetes. Low Blood Sugar Levels In DiabetesPeople with diabetes can have low blood sugar levels because of the medicines they have to take to manage their diabetes. They may need a hormone called or diabetes pills to help their bodies use the sugar in their blood. These medicines help take the sugar out of the blood and get it into the body’s cells, which makes the blood sugar level go down. But sometimes it’s a tricky balancing act and blood sugar levels can get too low. People with diabetes need to keep their blood sugars from getting too highor too low. Keeping blood sugar levels in a healthy range means balancing when and what they eat, and when they exercise with when they take medicines. After all, its not just carbohydrate intake that influences the amount of glucose coursing through your bloodstream when you have type 2 diabetes. Emotional stress and certain medications can increase your blood sugar levels, and a boost in activity can cause it to drop, says Megan ONeill, CDCES, a medical science liaison for diabetes care at Abbott healthcare company in Monterey, California. Sometimes people experience a spike in their blood sugar early in the morning due to the dawn effect, a temporary surge of hormones that occurs as the body prepares to wake, according to the Cleveland Clinic. For people with diabetes, managing blood glucose levels is especially important, ONeill says. Levels that are too low or high can result in complications that affect your kidneys, heart, and vision, reduce your quality of life, require expensive interventions, or even be fatal. Can Type 3 Diabetes Be Cured
What is Type 3 Diabetes? – Alzheimer’s is Type 3 Diabetes
Type 3 diabetes currently has no known cure. Despite $2.8 billion of research funding expected in 2020, currently, 100% of medications have failed clinical trials. Research continues for a cure for type 3 diabetes, but recent years have placed a focus heavily on more effective prevention and risk reduction of the disease. One of the most effective prevention methods has involved identifying the highest risk factors for type 3 diabetes and working to counteract them. What Is Type 3 DiabetesType 3 diabetes is a condition that is intricately linked with Alzheimers disease , which is the most common form of dementia in the US. Alzheimers disease is a form of vascular dementia and is so pervasive in todays world that it has become the third leading cause of mortality in both the United States and the United Kingdom. Dementia is a broad term for multiple neurodegenerative diseases that typically affect older adults, causing cognitive impairment and a steady decline in brain function and mental acuity. , dementia is arguably the most devastating disease of the 21st century:
The cost of dementia absolutely dwarfs other leading causes of mortality in the U.S., including heart disease and cancer . In this article, we’ll explore the connection between insulin resistance, diabetes, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease and showcase the research that demonstrates that your brain health is determined mainly by your lifestyle not by your genetics. Diabetes Is A Complicated Condition Which Can Take Many Different Forms In Addition To The More Common Types Of DiabetesAbout 2% of people have these other types of diabetes. These include different types of monogenic diabetes, cystic fibrosis-related diabetes, and diabetes caused by rare syndromes. Certain medications such as steroids and antipsychotics could lead to other types of diabetes, as well as surgery or hormonal imbalances. Unfortunately, many of these people are misdiagnosed leading to delays in getting the right treatment. Were proud of the research we have supported to ensure better diagnosis and treatments for all types of diabetes, and its taught us a lot about the condition. One other early sign of type 3 diabetes is unexplained weight loss, which can occur both due to the same insulin resistance that often accompanies type 3 diabetes as well as behavioral changes. Alzheimer’s Disease Is Type 3 Diabetes: Evidence From Human StudiesThis hypothesis was directly investigated by first examining postmortem cases of advanced AD and determining if the neurodegeneration was associated with significant abnormalities in the expression of genes encoding insulin, IGF-1, and IGF-2 peptides, their receptors, and downstream signaling mechanisms. In that study, we demonstrated advanced AD to be associated with strikingly reduced levels of insulin and IGF-1 polypeptide and receptor genes in the brain . In addition, all the signaling pathways that mediate insulin and IGF-1-stimulated neuronal survival, tau expression, energy metabolism, and mitochondrial function were perturbed in AD. This study carries additional significance because it established that, like all other pancreatic and intestinal polypeptide genes, the insulin gene was also expressed in the adult human brain. Moreover, the results taught us that endogenous brain deficiencies in insulin, IGF-1, IGF-2, and their corresponding receptors, in the absence of T2DM or obesity, could be linked to the most common form of dementia-associated neurodegeneration in the Western hemisphere. Since the abnormalities identified in the brain were quite similar to the effects of T1DM or T2DM , including abnormalities in IGFs, which are important for islet cell function,, we proposed the concept that AD may represent a brain-specific form of diabetes mellitus and coined the term type 3 diabetes. However, over the course of a lifetime, these risk factors can each contribute to cognitive decline and increase your risk for type 3 diabetes:
Once type 3 diabetes takes hold, this long term damage can increase, causing a wide variety of cognitive impairments like memory loss, cognitive decline, and more. Type 3 diabetes is different from other forms of dementia like vascular dementia based on the rate of loss of cognitive function. Vascular dementia is often caused by a stroke or other traumatic event, and results in an immediate decline in cognitive function, followed by a plateau. Type 3 diabetes manifests as a slow and steady decline in cognitive function. Type 3 Diabetes PreventionCurrently, theres no way to reverse type 3 diabetes. However, as mentioned above, less than 3% of all type 3 diabetes cases are genetically determined. The remaining 97% of cases can be affected by your lifestyle. Researchers: Alzheimer’s resembles a Type 3 diabetes in brain
This article was written by guest blogger Jessica Frisch-Daiello, Ph.D. People with type 2 diabetes are twice as likely to develop Alzheimers diseasea type of dementia affecting behavior, memory, and cognitive functions. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2013 Alzheimers ranked sixth and diabetes was seventh as the leading causes of death in the United States. Recent studies are suggesting a link between insulin resistance in the brain and Alzheimers disease, prompting some researchers to consider a new classification for the disease: type 3 diabetes. People with diabetes cant effectively break down blood sugar. Either their bodies dont produce enough insulin or their bodies become desensitized to insulin . The exact mechanisms between insulin resistance and Alzheimers disease are not well understood and research is on-going. However, studies suggest that insulin resistance in the brain leads to the formation of two pathological hallmarks of Alzheimers diseasethe formation of tau tangles and the build-up of clusters of beta amyloid peptides called plaques in the brain. The degree of insulin resistance is correlated with the amount of plaques deposited between nerve cells. Plaques create a blockade that inhibits cell-to-cell signaling in the brain. Additionally, insulin dysfunction has also been shown to affect the formation of tau tangles by mediating the activity of an important enzyme in the body, GSK-3 . Recommended Reading: What Happens In Diabetes Type 1 Maintaining Brain Health And PreventionSome cognitive decline is a natural part of the aging process, but whats important to note is that this natural age-associated decline appears to be fueled and encouraged by underlying insulin-resistance and metabolic imbalanceseven in individuals who arent yet showing signs of T2DM or insulin-resistance. Also, insulin-resistance may occur in the brain with or without signs of prediabetes or T2DM. All of this suggests that adopting healthy lifestyle habits to maintain good blood glucose management in early adulthood is key. Here are eight key areas to focus on now. 1. Monitor Overall Carb Intake: Our food system today makes it easy to consume more carbohydrates, so keep tabs on that intake to ensure its balanced with high-quality fats and lean proteins. While this doesnt necessarily mean eating a low-carb diet, some preliminary research does suggest that reducing carbohydrates could play a role in maintaining brain health and even possibly slowing AD progression. 2. Be Picky About Carbs: Choose high-quality, less processed carbs like beans, legumes, vegetables, whole grains, and fruits. These foods usually have more nutrients, including fiber which helps with blood glucose regulation. 5. Work Towards a Healthy Body Weight:Studies have suggested that middle-aged individuals with a BMI > 30 have increased risks for both dementia and AD. Working towards a healthy body weight now is key to decreasing risk of insulin-resistance today and down the road. This can happen due to an illness or condition that affects or damages the pancreas. It can also occur if you have had surgery on your pancreas or if it is removed completely. When there isnt enough insulin in the body the blood glucose levels begin to rise above the normal level and if left untreated this can lead to complications.
The main causes of type 3c diabetes are shown in the graph below. It is important to remember not everyone with chronic pancreatitis or the other conditions here will develop type 3c diabetes and the severity of the condition will depend on the damage caused to the pancreas, the amount of the pancreas removed during surgery and the health of any remaining organ. What Makes A Food Keto FriendlyA keto diet is a high-fat low, carb diet that has been used for years to treat many health conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and epilepsy among others. The most important part of following a keto diet is staying in ketosis. The way to do that is to not eat more than 50 grams of carbohydrates a day. Many people ideally consume 25 grams or less. Carbohydrates should take up less than 5% of your caloric intake. A good ratio to follow is 1.5 grams of net carbs for 100 calories of food. What Are Net Carbs? Net carbs are not the total carbohydrates listed in a food. The net carbs are the carbohydrates minus the fiber amount. This calculation is done because fiber does not have a significant metabolic effect on your body . Lets Look At An Example What are the net carbs in carrots? 100 grams of carrots contain 6.7g of carbs and 2.8g of fiber. To determine the net carbs in carrots you simply subtract the fiber from the carbs 6.7g carbs 2.8g fiber = 3.9g of net carbs. There are 3.9g of net carbs in 100 grams of carrots. Are Carrots Keto-Friendly? Since 3.9g of net carbs are more than the suggested amount of 1.5g per 100 grams of food, I would say carrots are not keto-friendly. This doesnt mean you cant enjoy carrots while following a keto diet is just means to watch your portion size and overall intake of net carbs. I find it fascinating that something resulting from politics, not food science, has come to be central to so many conversations about nutrition. The phrase was initially introduced without definition and helped Congress identify and delegate monies for food production subsidies, and only later became a part of federal nutrition policy. The truth is, there are hundreds of levels of complexity in carbohydrate molecules, and grouping them into simple and complex is really a bit of a misdirection. Think instead in terms of natural carbs, as in those from whole plants, and processed carbs, as in those coming from factory processed foods. Stick with natural carbs and reject processed carbs. How does sugar affect blood pressure? Does sugar raise blood pressure?
When you eat, your body breaks down your food, some of which becomes glucose or blood sugar. Your body will take most of this glucose and use it to fuel your cells, but it also sends some of the excess glucose to your liver, which stores it for later use. Meanwhile, your pancreas produces insulin to control the sugar levels in your blood so that they donât rise too high. Insulin helps your body process sugars. If you havenât eaten in a long time, your body will release hormones from your pancreas to tell your liver to release the glucose that it has stored back into your bloodstream. Your body will then use that glucose to regulate the energy your cells need until the next time you eat. When your blood glucose levels dip too low, your cells donât have enough energy to useâthis is hypoglycemia. Your body produces insulin to prevent your blood sugars from rising too quickly. Still, sometimes it makes too much, which can cause it all to dip dangerously instead. Knowing what to watch for and how to treat low blood sugar can help keep you healthy and safe. What Are The Benefits Of Lowering Blood PressureThere is now plenty of good evidence from studies that controlling blood pressure in people with diabetes reduces the risk of future complications. A large research study called the UK Prospective Diabetes Study confirmed this. In this study, many people with diabetes were monitored over several years. The study found that those with well-controlled blood pressure had nearly a third less risk of dying from complications related to diabetes compared with those with poorly controlled blood pressure. In fact, this study found that good control of blood pressure was even more beneficial than good control of the blood sugar level to reduce the risk of developing complications from diabetes. Since this study, other studies have been undertaken which confirm these results. How Does Sugar Contribute To Metabolic SyndromeSugary beverages and processed foods that contain lots of added sugar that are immediately broken down by the digestive system, entering the bloodstream in high amounts. This causes a spike in blood sugar levels. Lots of glucose is coursing through the blood vessels and in response, the pancreas releases insulin that signals to body tissues to use available glucose to power cellular processes. Though some glucose is vital for survival and normal energy levels, excess glucose causes inflammation and is stored as fat throughout the body and in the liver. Over time, chronic consumption of excess glucose can cause inflammation that damages the pancreas and makes insulin unresponsive to glucose in the bloodstream. This results in hallmarks of metabolic syndrome, including insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Blood sugar levels are measured using a small sample of blood that is tested in a lab. Blood sugar can also be tested using at home devices such as a handheld glucometer. Levels that indicate hyperglycemia are indicative of prediabetes and both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Normal ranges of blood sugar will vary depending on the test being done. In general, a normal fasting glucose level will be between 70-100 mg/dL. After a meal, these levels are expected to rise slightly around 1 to 2 hours after the beginning of a meal, but should be less than 180 ml/dL. Maintaining healthy blood sugar levels is important not only for metabolic health, but heart health too. Over time, high blood sugar can damage blood vessels and the nerves that control your heart. People with diabetes are also more likely to have other conditions that raise the risk for heart disease:

It can transport cholesterol from extrahepatic tissues to the liver for metabolism and then be excreted by bile. High-density lipoprotein cholesterol can protect blood vessels, prevent fat deposits on the inner walls of blood vessels, thereby preventing arteriosclerosis. Low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol has a great impact on the body and can easily lead to the risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Eating more foods rich in unsaturated fatty acids is an effective way to increase HDL cholesterol. Such as rapeseed oil, avocado oil, olive oil, peanuts and soybeans and so on. In addition, fresh vegetables and fruits rich in soluble fiber can also effectively increase high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Risk Factors Associated With Diabetes And High Blood PressureWhy should those with diabetes be aware of the risks of high blood pressure? Type 2 diabetes is caused by resistance to insulin, the hormone your body needs to use blood sugar for energy. Since the bodies of those with type 2 diabetes resist insulin, sugar builds up in their blood. That means your body makes even more insulin, and insulin causes your body to retain salt and fluids, which is one way diabetes increases your risk for high blood pressure, said Dr. Hatipoglu. Over time, diabetes damages the small blood vessels in your body, causing the walls of the blood vessels to stiffen. This increases pressure, which leads to high blood pressure. The combination of high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes can greatly increase your risk of having a heart attack or stroke. Having type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure also increases your chances of developing other diabetes-related diseases, such as kidney disease and retinopathy. Chronic high blood pressure can also contribute to early onset of conditions such as Alzheimers disease, dementia, and stroke because the blood vessels in the brain are particularly susceptible to damage due to high blood pressure. This could lead to long term health hazards like high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases, etc. Research studies were conducted where a personâs normal diet was replaced by fruits and vegetables. It was found that blood pressure could be kept in check after executing this diet plan. However, the results are now being reconsidered. It is true that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables does not contain added salt but at the same time it does not contain any added sugar too. Moreover, the role of sugar was overlooked while interpreting the results. Contrary to popular belief salt has various health benefits. They are as follows:

Some people, especially if you have diabetes, are at a higher risk of your blood pressure temporarily dropping after eating or when getting up from a chair or from lying down in bed, for example. The former is whats called postprandial hypotension and the latter is orthostatic hypotension. Normally, when youre digesting food, or when you change your body position from sitting to standing, your cardiovascular system adapts by beating harder as well as more rapidly, and constricting the diameter of certain blood vessels, such as those far from your intestine where digestion occurs. These physiological changes all collaborate to maintain your blood pressure. But, if these changes do not occur fast or adequately enough, your blood pressure can drop, sometimes to dangerous levels. There is no such thing as a single “perfect” diabetic diet, and neither is there a ONE food that works for everyone. Oatmeal is a good source of nutrition for diabetics but also needs to be eaten with care as oatmeal is still mainly a source of carbohydrates. It’s worth knowing that around 8 of these carbohydrates grams are in the form of dietary fiber, which may help to prevent blood glucose levels from spiking. With that in mind, eating oats in moderation and adhering to a meal plan that is appropriate for diabetes is still crucial. If you have diabetes, eating a bowl of oatmeal with hot water some type of healthy low-fat milk or greek yogurt every morning before you eat any other snacks will be beneficial in treating your condition because it is packed with nutrients that will protect against inflammation and help regulate your insulin response when paired with a nutritious diet plan. As long as you eat steel-cut oats that are not prepackaged or instant oatmeal with added sweeteners, oatmeal is generally safe to include in your diet plan if you have diabetes, just make sure it doesn’t contain any added sugars and salt. Don’t add sweeteners that contain many calories like honey, syrup, or brown sugar. Steel-cut oatmeal is a low glycemic index because it is absorbed more slowly so that oatmeal does not necessarily spike your blood sugar quickly. Yet, it will still spike your blood sugar its just not as quick. Thats a good thing because if youre taking medications, they sometimes take time to get into your blood, and if your blood sugar spikes so fast before drugs kick in and that will be a problem, right? The Glycemic index of the steel-cut oatmeals is good there its below 55. On the other hand, not every oatmeal is the same. you have to really understand that now the best thing you can have is steel-cut oatmeal which takes almost 30 minutes to cook. my best suggestion for that would be an instapot or something like a pressure cooker that can cook oatmeal within less than five minutes. its still not going to be one minute like the instant oatmeal which probably most people do eat especially if youre working, trying to get to work, etc. Although instant oatmeal still keeps the nutritional value oatmeal loses all of its fibers because it is heavily processed. So I would not recommend eating oatmeal that is not steel-cut oatmeal. That includes rolled oats, instant oats, and any other oats out there. Steel Cut Oats Have A Low Glycemic IndexAnother benefit of steel cut oats is that they rank fairly low on the glycemic index. The glycemic index gives foods a numerical value that tells you how it impacts your blood sugar when you consume carbohydrates. The lower the food is on the glycemic index, the better. Steel cut oats weigh in at a 55, which means their potential to spike your blood sugar to unhealthy levels is minimal. People who suffer from health conditions like diabetes or prediabetes can consume carbohydrates that are low on the glycemic index, and this can help them avoid dangerous spikes in their blood sugar levels. This makes steel cut oats a very good choice for individuals who must keep a close watch on their glucose. Metric per metric, rolled oats and steel cut oats are almost the same when it comes to nutritional value. However, steel cut oats beat out rolled oats in two areas, fiber content and density, which make steel cut oats the best bang for your nutritional buck. Whole grain oats, sometimes referred to as oat kernels, are made up of three parts: the germ, the brand, and the endosperm. When oats are referred to as groats, it means they are whole grain oat kernels without a husk. Sometimes these oat kernels with no husk are simply called “oat groats.” Steel cut oats are made by taking the oat groats and cutting them into 2 to 3 smaller pieces using a steel blade. Steel cut oats are also sometimes called Irish oats. Toasting steel cut oats gives them a delicious nutty flavor that sets them apart from other types of oats. Steel cut oats are also more coarse than other types of oats and tend to be chewier. This gives them a hearty texture that is very filling, but it does mean they require longer soaking and cooking times. However, they are still good to use in an overnight oats recipe. Rolled oats are made by flattening and steaming them rather than cutting them with a steel blade. As a result, rolled oats require less cook time than steel cut oats and are sometimes called “old-fashioned” rolled oats.
